CMS represented by 22 at ITA West Regional

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's and women's tennis programs are represented by 22 athletes in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships, presented by Oracle. The West Regional is hosted by Pomona-Pitzer and will be played on the courts at the Pauley Tennis Complex and the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

The champions in singles and doubles from each of the eight regionals advance to the 2016 ITA Oracle Cup at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club in Surprise, Ariz.

Both the Stags and Athenas have historically had success at the ITA West Regional. In 2015, Skyler Butts (CMC '16) won the individual championship while a pair from UC Santa Cruz took the doubles title. The Stags have won the ITA West Regional in singles for the past five years: Alex Lane (2011), Neel Kotrappa (2012), Butts (2013, 2015) and Glenn Hull (2014). Joe Dorn and Warren Wood won the ITA West Regional doubles championship in 2012. Doubles pair Caroline Ward (CMC '16) and senior Katie Kuosman (CMC) was back-to-back ITA West Regional Champions in 2014 and 2015.

The Stags have 12 singles players in the 64-player draw. Competing for CMS and seeded in the top-16 are No. 1 Hull, No. 3 senior Daniel Morkovine (CMC), No. 5 senior Max Macey (CMC), No. 8 freshman Nikolai Paroldi (CMC), No. 9 sophomore Julian Gordy (CMC), No. 10 seniorAlex Brenner (CMC), No. 13 freshman Jake Berber (CMC). Also in the draw are freshman Daniel Park (CMC), sophomore Avinash Vemuri (CMC), senior Rohan Shankar (HMC), freshman Matthew Jacobs (CMC), and sophomore Alfred Simental (CMC).

On the doubles side, the Stags have six teams in the 32-team draw. The team of Morkovine and Gordy is the No. 2 seeded duo after Morkovine's ITA Doubles All-American award in 2016. Paroldi and Hull, Berber and Park, Brenner and Macey, Vemuri and Shankar, and Simental and Williams round out the doubles pairs for the CMS men.

All 10 athletes not currently studying abroad will be competing for the Athenas this weekend. Seven singles players are ranked with Kuosman seeded No. 2. The other seeded players are No. 4 junior Kyla Scott (HMC), No. 5 junior Lindsay Brown (CMC), No. 7 freshman Catherine Allen(SCR), and all tied at the No. 9 seed are sophomore Jessie Cruz (CMC), freshman Madison Shea (CMC) and freshman Nicole Tan (CMC). Also competing in the singles draw are freshman Juliette Martin (HMC), Lauren Yamagami (CMC), and Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SCR).

Three of the CMS women's doubles teams are seeded. Kousman and Scott, her new partner, are ranked No. 1, Brown and Tan will team up at No. 4 and Allen and Cruz will compete at No. 5. The final two pairs are Martin and Yamagami, and Bryan-Ajania and Shea.
