Shutout victory for Athenas in round two of NCAA Regionals

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team cruised to a 5-0 victory in the second round of the NCAA Regionals over Trinity (Texas) University. It was the first match of the NCAA tournament for the 20-4 (10-1 SCIAC) Athenas who  are now one win away from advancing to the NCAA Team Championships Quarterfinals for the sixth straight year.

CMS took all three doubles matches, with the number one doubles pairing of senior Caroline Ward (CMC) and junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) blowing by the Tigers' Liza Southwick and Marie Lutz 8-2. CMS trailed 3-0 in doubles number three before sophomores Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Bria Smith (CMC) notched eight-straight and the pairing of sophomore Kyla Scott (HMC) with freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) played a back and forth match with Cheyenne Duncan and Caroline Kutach in doubles two before the Athenas prevailed 9-7.

Cruz was the first Athena to win a singles match, defeating Duncan 6-3, 6-2 in singles number five. Shortly thereafter, Kuosman defeated Caroline Kutach 6-3, 6-4 in singles number two to capture the fifth point for CMS and seal the 5-0 victory.

Other singles matches that did not finish included Ward in singles one against Marie Lutz with the score 6-2, 3-4, singles three with Brown up 6-3, 3-1 over Liza Southwick, singles four where Scott held a 6-2, 6-5 advantage over Andrea De Leon and singles six with Smith and Blaire Porter tied 4-4 in the first set.

CMS similarly defeated the Tigers in round two of last year's NCAA Regionals, by the same 5-0 score.

The Athenas will play their third round match on May 15 with the time and opponent TBD.
