CMS eases by Redlands; sets SCIAC title match-up against Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Once again, the No. 2 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team finds itself in the finals of the SCIAC Championships, this year after defeating No. 3 Redlands 8-1 in the semifinals on May 7 at the Pauley Tennis Complex.

CMS advances to the finals for the sixth year in a row (winning the last four) and faces top-seed Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Pomona-Pitzer. This is the second year in a row that the two rivals will play for the conference championship and fifth time in six seasons. Pomona-Pitzer defeated CMS 5-4 earlier this season, on April 1.

In doubles against Redlands (15-8), CMS won all three matches with relative ease and went into singles ahead 3-0. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams both won 8-1 and ended at the same time. Sophomore Kyla Scott (HMC) and freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) defeated Elizabeth Johnson and Kate Dolan 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. In the third slot, sophomores Bria Smith (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) defeated Gabriela Vasquez and Emily Murnin. CMS' top doubles team (second in the West Region) of junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) and senior Caroline Ward (CMC) took down the West Region's third-ranked doubles team of Natalie Etchegaray and Lauren Villanueva, 8-4.

Singles play saw CMS (18-4) take five of six matches, the lone loss for CMS coming in the top position as Ward lost to Etchegaray in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6. At No. 3 singles, Brown defeated Villanueva 6-1, 6-0. The clinching point for CMS came when Cruz beat Vasquez 6-1, 6-5 at No. 5 singles. Kuosman (7-5, 5-7, 10-4) at No. 2, Scott (6-2, 6-3) at No. 4 and Smith (6-2, 6-3) at No. 6 each won their respective singles matches.
