Decisive 7-2 win over No. 2 Bowdoin
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team beat No. 2 Bowdoin in decisive fashion on Saturday morning at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. With the win, the Athenas remain unbeaten in Division III play and improve to 10-1 overall.
The Athenas took a commanding lead 3-0 after the doubles matches. Sophomore Kyla Scott (HMC) and freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) won the first doubles point 8-3 by dominating the net play with Scott having a number of quick reaction volleys. Sophomores Bria Smith (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) were second to finish followed by No. 1 pair Caroline Ward (CMC) and Katie Kuosman (CMC) who completed the doubles sweep with the rest of both teams watching.
Cruz won the first singles point, increasing CMS' lead to 4-1 with the remaining four matches all beginning third sets. After dropping the second set 6-1, Brown came roaring back with win the third 6-2 to take the match and clinch the win for the Athenas with a break in the final game. Smith earned the sixth point despite losing the first set. She took both the second and third by a score of 6-2 for the solid victory at No. 6 singles. No. 23 Ward won her third set 6-3 to beat the current No. 12 and 2015 runner-up in the NCAA singles championship, Joulia Likhanskaia.
CMS next heads to Georgia where they will face No. 1 Williams, No. 4 Emory and No. 24 Trinity (Tex.) March 25-27.
