Off and running; CMS blanks Cal Lu in 2016 opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Conference season and the regular season converged on the opening day of the 2016 season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team. CMS overwhelmed Cal Lutheran 9-0 in the season-opener on Feb. 6. It has been nearly five years since CMS has lost a conference match, a streak that has spanned portions now of six seasons and on Saturday, CMS showed no signs of letting that streak end any time soon.

CMS (1-0, 1-0 SCIAC) won 8-3 in No.1 and No. 3 doubles. CMS' top doubles team of senior Caroline Ward (CMC) and junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) took down Emily Werman and Gianna Cupo while the sophomore team of Lauren Livingston (CMC) and Bria Smith (CMC) defeated Annette Sousa and Shelby Kubota at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, sophomores Kyla Scott (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC) cruised to an 8-1 win.

Each of the six singles matches went to the Athenas in straight sets, the two most resounding wins coming in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Freshman Jessie Cruz (CMC) won 6-1, 6-0 for the first match-play win of her college career. Ward (No. 1 singles: 6-4, 6-1), Kuosman (No. 2 singles: 6-1, 6-1), Brown (No. 3 singles: 6-1, 6-3) and Scott (No. 4 singles: 6-4, 6-4) also won their matches.

With the season-opener in the books, the Athenas have a week off from competition before their next match (at UC San Diego – Feb. 13) and three weeks before the next SCIAC match (Caltech – Feb. 27).
