Athena doubles team moves on to semifinals of Small College Nationals

SUMTER, S.C. – The top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis doubles team of junior Katie Kuosman (CMC) and senior Caroline Ward (CMC) won their opening round match of the 2015 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships on Oct. 15 and have advanced to the semifinals.

In the national quarterfinal round, the Athenas defeated Madie Benn and Michelle Fuca of Skidmore in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The win has set up a semifinal match with a team from Wesleyan, the fourth seed at Nationals. The semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 16. Should Ward and Kuosman advance, the finals are after the semis at 5:30 p.m. (ET).

The Division III national champion then competes to become the overall "Super Bowl" champion. The Super Bowl pits the winner of each level of the Small College Championships (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges) against each other.

The Small College Championships are familiar territory for Ward and Kuosman, having won the national title in 2014 and earning a trip to the Super Bowl.
