Rematch against Emory up next for CMS in D-III semis after win over CMU

MASON, Ohio – After several hours of delays because of weather and a site location change, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team fought off Carnegie Mellon for a 5-1 win in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on May 18. With the win, CMS has advanced to the national semifinals against Emory on May 19 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center with match time set for 11 a.m. EST. The match can be watched live on the NCAA Live Video webpage.

This is the second time in three seasons that CMS has played in the national semifinals. Emory and CMS played earlier in the season in Claremont, with Emory winning 5-4. The match against Carnegie Mellon spanned six-plus hours because of rain delays and location changes.

CMS went ahead 2-0 in doubles after wins in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Junior Caroline Ward (CMC) and sophomore Katie Kuosman (CMC) defeated Bryn Raschke and Cori Sidell 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. Shortly thereafter, senior Sarah Kukino (CMC) and freshman Kyla Scott (HMC) took care of business in No. 2 doubles, winning 8-5. CMS had a comfortable advantage in No. 2 doubles but CMU moved within a game at 6-5 before CMS won the last two games to take the match. The closest doubles match came in No. 3 doubles as CMS freshman Lindsay Brown (CMC) and freshman Lauren Livingston (CMC) won in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5), after leading 7-4 earlier in the match over Brooke Tsu and Nicholle Torres.

In singles, CMU tightened the match up and made the match interesting, despite the 5-1 CMS win. Kuosman gave CMS a 4-0 lead with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory at No. 2 singles over Angela Pratt. CMU took its lone point at No. 4 singles when Tsu won in straight sets over Brown, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Kukino closed out the win for CMS in No. 3 singles. She won the first set easily, 6-1, then lost the second set 4-6 before a 6-4 third set victory. Each of the other three singles matches were in the third set when the match completed.
