Athenas punch ticket to NCAA D-III quarters with win over rival

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Two matches into the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team has yet to lose a singles or doubles match. CMS defeated Trinity 5-0 in the second round of the NCAA Championships on May 9. They followed that win up with a 5-0 victory over Pomona-Pitzer on May 10 in the third round, which now puts CMS in the Division III quarterfinals against Carnegie Mellon on May 18 in Mason, Ohio.

The final three rounds of the team championships run from May 18-20 in Ohio. Back in March, CMS defeated quarterfinal opponent Carnegie Mellon 7-2 in Claremont.

In Sunday's match against Pomona-Pitzer, CMS had to fight its way through doubles. CMS took all three doubles points, but all three matches were close, particularly at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Senior Sarah Kukino (CMC) and Kyla Scott (HMC) won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles for CMS' first point of the match. Freshmen Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Lauren Livingston (CMC) followed up with a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles over Mary Zhao and Maddie Gordon.

The closest doubles match came in the top spot as junior Caroline Ward (CMC) and sophomore Katie Kuosman (CMC) narrowly escaped with a win in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5)  over Lea Lynn Yen and Grace Hruska. In the previous two matches between CMS and Pomona-Pitzer in 2015, Pomona-Pitzer took one doubles match on each occasion.

A pair of 6-3, 6-4 victories in singles by Kuosman (No. 2 singles) and Brown (No. 4 singles) gave CMS the win. Kuosman's win over Shivani Doraiswami ended the match at 5-0 and put CMS into the quarterfinals.
