Non-conference stretch closes for Athenas with victory over No.16 MIT

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After its 8-1 win over MIT on March 24 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team now has won four matches in a row and the team ended the non-conference portion of its schedule at 11-1. CMS is 12-1 overall on the season, having played one conference match – Cal Lutheran – earlier in March.

The 8-1 victory over MIT on Tuesday is the latest in a four-match stretch of lopsided victories over some of the best opponents in Division III recently for the Athenas.

CMS' doubles teams had to fight to earn the 3-0 lead heading into singles. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Katie Kuosman (CMC) and Caroline Ward (CMC) defeated Victoria Tam and Elysa Kohrs 8-6. Freshmen Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Bria Smith (CMC) paired up in No. 3 doubles and also had a close, 8-6 win. Freshman Kyla Scott (HMC) and senior Sarah Kukino (CMC) posted the largest margin of victory in their No. 2 doubles win, 8-1 over Sonya Das and Michelle Dutt.

In No. 1 singles, 17th-ranked Ward scored an impressive two-set, 6-4, 6-3 win over Kohrs who is the 12th-ranked singles player in Division III. Kuosman (No. 2 singles – 6-1, 6-1), Kukino (No. 3 singles – 6-1, 6-4), Brown (No. 4 singles – 6-2, 6-0) and Scott (No. 5 singles – 7-5, 6-2) won their respective matches. MIT's lone point came in No. 6 singles as Claremont native Cindy Liu defeated Smith 6-2, 6-2.

CMS is back into conference action on March 27 at La Verne at 2 p.m.
