Tufts and Middlebury fail to slow CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Continuing through the midst of its non-conference schedule, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team earned wins over No. 17 Tufts (9-0) and No. 10 Middlebury on back-to-back days, March 20-21 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS now sits at 11-1 on the season with one non-conference match remaining before conference season gets in full swing. The Athenas are 3-1 against top-10 opponents so far in 2015.

CMS 9, Tufts 0 (March 20)

Against Tufts, CMS eased its way to another sweep, its second in a row and fourth overall this year. With an 8-0 win in No. 2 doubles, senior Sarah Kukino and freshman Kyla Scott gave CMS an early 1-0 advantage and they would never look back. The tightest doubles match of the whole afternoon came in No. 3 doubles as freshmen Lindsay Brown and Bria Smith eked out a 9-7 win over Chelsea Hayashi and Jacquline Baum to wrap up doubles, after CMS' top doubles team of junior Caroline Ward and sophomore Katie Kuosman won 8-4.

Kuosman in singles played the only three-set match and she had to come back to get the win, as she trailed after the first set. She ended up getting the win, 3-6, 6-2 (10-4). The first singles match to finish was Brown in the fourth position, 6-0, 6-1. All of the remaining singles matches went just two sets in CMS' favor.

CMS 7, Middlebury 2 (March 21)
Against a tough Middlebury squad who's season has just gotten underway, CMS performed well winning five singles matches, four of which were won in two sets.

Middlebury's first point came in No. 3 doubles as Alexandra Fields and Lauren Amos defeated Brown and Smith 8-6. For CMS, Kukino and Scott won easily in No. 2 doubles, 8-2. With the match even at 1-1, Kuosman and Ward in No. 1 doubles had to really fight to keep the match from heading to singles in Middebury's favor. Ward and Kuosman had to win in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (4) over Lily Bondy and Ria Gerger to give CMS the 2-1 lead.

In singles play, eighth-ranked Gerger defeated Ward 6-4, 6-4 for Middlebury's other point of the match. Beyond that, CMS controlled the match. Scott's 6-4, 6-3 win in No. 5 singles over Margot Marchese clinched the win for CMS.

Kukino had the toughest time en route to a win as she won 6-4, 2-6 (10-6) in No. 3 singles.
