Top-seeded Athenas set to begin quest for National Small College Championships title

SUMTER, S.C. – Heading into the ITA/USTA National Small College Championships which run from Oct. 9-12, individuals from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team represent the top seeds in both the singles and doubles tournament.

Results from the weekend can be found on the ITA Small College Championships webpage.

Junior Caroline Ward is the top-seeded singles player and faces off against Ashnaa Rao of Johns Hopkins on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. (EST). Depending on results, her next match will be against either Rebecca Ho of Washington University St. Louis or fourth-seeded Beatrice Rosen from Emory at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Ward then teams up with sophomore Katie Kuosman as the top-seeded doubles pairing. They face off against Alicia Beck and Bridgid McGuire of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Thursday at 1 p.m. Depending on opening round results, Kuosman and Ward will play either a doubles team from Bowdoin or the doubles team from Emory who is the fourth seed.

The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions.

Should a CMS representative be crowned as the singles or doubles champion at the Division III level, they would then compete to become the overall "Super Bowl" champion. The "Super Bowl" pits the winner of each level of the Small College Championships (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges) against each other.

The "Super Bowl" champions earn wild cards into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with the opportunity to win the culminating event held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
