CMS advances to third round of NCAAs with win over Whitman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team defeated No. 27 Whitman 5-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on May 10 at CMS' Biszantz Family Tennis Center. With the win, their second of the season over Whitman, CMS is now 22-7 on the season and advances to the third round of the NCAA Championships to face Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday, May 11 at CMS' Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The third round match begins at 12 p.m. PST.

Whitman gave CMS all it could handle in doubles play, as CMS took a 2-1 doubles lead, but the doubles score nearly ended up in Whitman's favor. Katie Kuosman and Caroline Ward easily defeated Whitman's Courtney Lawless and Madison Webster 8-1 in No. 1 doubles to give CMS a 1-0 lead. Whitman then evened the score as Katrina Allick and Erin Bell defeated Chloe Dobbert and Sarah Kukino in No. 2 doubles 8-6. Crystal Lim and Yvonne Likomanova had to hold off Morgan Lawless and Allie Wallin 9-7 to get CMS the deciding doubles point.

In singles play, the Athenas were carried by the middle portion of their lineup as Dobbert in No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-4), Kukino in No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-1) and Lim in No. 5 singles (6-1, 6-1) secured the 5-1 win for CMS. Dobbert had the clinching point for CMS in No. 3 singles with the 6-4, 6-4 win over Morgan Lawless.
