Sixth Street matchup between best in the West goes to Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a matchup between two of Division III's top programs and the top two squads in the West Region, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team eased passed No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, April 5 at Pomona-Pitzer's Pauley Tennis Complex. CMS is now 13-7 overall and perfect in SCIAC matches at 6-0.

In doubles, CMS took all three points with the closest match being in No. 2 doubles as the West Region's 14th ranked doubles team of senior Chloe Dobbert and junior Sarah Kukino defeated Samantha Chao and Maddie Gordon 8-6. The West Region's top-ranked doubles team of sophomore Caroline Ward and freshman Katie Kuosman won No. 1 doubles 8-4 over Marie Fleming and Rosemary Pelch. Senior Crystal Lim and sophomore Yvonne Likomanova had the largest margin of victory in doubles as they won 8-2 in the No. 3 position.

Pomona-Pitzer's lone point of the match came in No. 2 singles as Samantha Mae Coyiuto defeated senior Dobbert 6-1, 7-5. Ward (No. 1), Kuosman (No. 3), Kukino (No. 4), Lim (No. 5) and Likomanova (No. 6) all earned two set victories over their Sagehen counterparts in singles play.

CMS now has two team matches left in the regular season – April 12 vs. Occidental and April 13 vs. Santa Cruz, both at home – before The Ojai Tournament April 24-27. The Athenas then host the SCIAC Championships May 2-3 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center which lead up to the NCAA Division III Championship in May.
