Doubles deficit not enough to stop Athenas in narrow win over Middlebury

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Down 2-1 after doubles play, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team came back and squeaked out a 5-4 win over No. 6 Middlebury on March 25 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center for the team's third win in a row. CMS is now 10-6 on the season after its second win of the year over an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) top-10 team.

The Athenas came up just short of heading into singles play with a  2-1 lead after Middlebury's Lauren Amos and Margot Marchese defeated senior Crystal Lim and sophomore Yvonne Likomanova in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5). The No. 2 doubles team of senior Chloe Dobbert and junior Sarah Kukino earned the first point of the match for the Athenas as they defeated Alexandra Fields and Jennifer Sundstrom 8-6.

In singles, CMS took four points as each match for the Athenas was won in two sets. Sophomore Caroline Ward in No. 1 singles, Dobbert in No. 3 singles, Kukino in No. 4 singles and Lim in No. 5 singles all earned wins for CMS.

After a stretch of five-straight non-conference opponents, the Athenas are back in SCIAC action on March 28 against Chapman and March 29 against Redlands with both matches being played at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
