Wins at back end of the lineup carry CMS to win over No. 7 Bowdoin
CLAREMONT, Calif. – In its toughest test yet on the Division III portion of its schedule, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team snuck by No. 7 Bowdoin 5-4 on March 15 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Behind wins in No. 5 and No.6 singles and No. 3 doubles, the Athenas earned their third-straight win and improved to 7-5 on the season and 5-0 against Division III opponents.
CMS took two of three doubles matches and then split its singles matches. Doubles wins came for CMS came in the No. 1 (8-4) and No. 3 (8-4) position. Senior Crystal Lim and sophomore Yvonne Likomanova teamed up for the win in No. 3 doubles over Tiffany Cheng and Samantha Stalder while sophomore Caroline Ward and freshman Katie Kuosman defeated Joulia Likhanskaia and Emma Chow in No. 1 doubles.
Ward also added a win in No. 1 singles over 36th ranked over Kate Winingham. Bowdoin took the No. 2-4 singles matches. The bottom portion of CMS' lineup came up big as senior Chloe Dobbert won 6-4, 6-4 over Emma Lewis and Likomanova won 6-2,7-6 (6) over Pilar Giffenig in No. 6 singles.
Next up for the Athenas is a rematch of last season's third place match at the NCAA Division III Championship, as Amherst visits the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on March 21, part of the Hen/Athena Women's Tennis Classic. The Hen/Athena Classic runs from March 21-23 and is hosted both by CMS and Pomona-Pitzer and includes several of the nation's top Division III women's tennis teams.
