Williams Hands Athenas First Loss Of Season; Sends CMS To Third Place Game

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In March the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team defeated Williams College 5-4 in Claremont. Tuesday's matchup ended differently however as five-time defending NCAA champion Williams topped CMS 5-1 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships at Stowe Stadium. CMS next faces Amherst at 8:30 a.m. PST in the third place game, while Williams advances to the finals for the right to play for the Division III title.

The lone point for CMS came in No. 1 doubles as freshman Caroline Ward and senior Kristin Lim took an 8-4 win in No. 1 doubles over Rebecca Curran and Kara Shoemaker. Williams cruised to an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles as Kathleen Elkins and Maria Pylpiv defeated sophomore Sarah Kukino and junior Crystal Lim 8-2. The closest doubles match came in No. 3 doubles as Monica Pastor and Nancy Worley defeated junior Chloe Dobbert and freshman Yvonne Likomanova in a 9-7 tiebreaker.

In singles, the bottom half of the lineup carried Williams as the No. 4 through No.6 players all got wins. Pylpiv earned the first singles win in No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Dobbert to give Williams a 3-1 lead. Pastor then defeated Likomanova 6-1, 6-1 in No. 6 singles and then Worley closed out the win for Williams with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kukino in No. 4 singles.
