CMS Prepares to Host 2020 SCIAC Diving Championships this Weekend

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will serve as the host of the 2020 SCIAC Diving Championships, which will be held this Saturday and Sunday at Axelrood Pool, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Saturday's action will get underway with the men's 1-meter prelims at 9:30 a.m., which will be followed by the women's 3-meter prelims at 11:45 a.m. The finals will take place in the afternoon with the men's competition starting at 2:30 p.m. and the women getting underway at 3:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the men and women will change boards, with the men getting the action started with the 3-meter prelims at 9:30 a.m., and the women following with the 1-meter prelims at 12:10 p.m. The men's 3-meter finals will be at 2:45 p.m., followed by the women's 1-meter finals at 3:50 p.m.
For the Stags, senior Kendall Hollimon will be looking to end his career with a perfect 8-for-8 sweep of SCIAC Championships after winning both the 1-meter and the 3-meter in each of his first three season. Hollimon is a four-time All-American with national championship aspirations in the 3-meter after finishing fourth, fourth and third and the NCAA Championships in each of his first three seasons.
Hollimon will be pushed at this year's championships, particularly by Pomona-Pitzer divers Jem Stern and Ben Willett, who finished within 10 points of him in the 1-meter in the dual meet between the teams in December. Senior Jacob Miner of Redlands was also an All-SCIAC finisher in the 3-meter last year, coming in third place behind Hollimon and Stern. The Stags will also hope to have one of their other competitors reach the podium, as juniors JD Herrera and Kiubon Kokko and sophomores Abai Houser and Luke Lenhart have the potential to be in the afternoon's finals, where they will compete for a top-three finish.
For the Athenas, Jacque Desmond graduated after an All-SCIAC performance a year ago on both boards, so they will rely on some new faces to try to reach the finals and earn points towards the team total. A trio of first-years have the potential to make an impact in their first SCIAC Championships, as Makenna Parkinson swept both dives at the final tri-meet of the regular season against Occidental and Whittier, followed by Kimiko Adler in second and Karena Klinkenberg in third. Junior Jen Franklin also has strong potential to reach the afternoon's finals as well.
The individual championships on the women's side are wide open as both champions last year graduated (Kellyn Toole of Chapman and Megan Thai of Whittier), as well as Desmond, who was third in both events. Emma van der Veen of Pomona-Pitzer returns after finishing second on both boards last year and should challenge for the individual titles, while senior Sami Scarano of Redlands has dominated the SCIAC Diver of the Week Award this season, winning it five times in total.
Admission to all SCIAC Championship events is $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens or military personnel, and free for anyone with a valid SCIAC ID. The championships will be video streamed through the SCIAC streaming portal (SCIACtv).
