SCIAC Record for Augusta Lewis Highlights Day Two of SCIAC Championships for CMS Women's Swim and Dive

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Freshman Augusta Lewis broke a school and SCIAC record in the 200 IM, and sophomore Mia Syme, freshman Leila El Masri and sophomore Janet Tran finished 1-2-3 in the 500-yard freestyle to highlight the performance of the CMS women's swimming and diving team on the second day of the SCIAC Championships on Friday.

CMS won all three of the individual events that were contested on Friday, with Lewis, Syme and junior Jocelyn Crawford (50 free) each getting to the top of the podium. The three championships helped CMS into a first-place standing with 417 points after two days, with Pomona-Pitzer in second with 379. Occidental is way behind in third with 216, making it a two-team race over the final two days of the SCIACs.

The first event of the day was the 500-yard freestyle, as well as the first individual event of the championships, after day one consisted only of two relays. The Athenas monopolized the podium with a 1-2-3 finish. Syme came in under five minutes with the winning time of 4:59.35 (an NCAA "B" cut), with El Masri in second at 5:04.36. Tran, meanwhile, won a dramatic finish to the wall to earn her way to All-SCIAC honors, finishing in 5:05.47, eight-hundredths of a second ahead of Kirsten Motimer of Pomona-Pitzer.

Lewis then took her first turn in the pool of the weekend and picked up a dominant win, finishing in 2:02.84 to set a new league and meet record, almost five seconds ahead of second-place Sarah Jin of Pomona-Pitzer. The old SCIAC (and CMS) record of 2:03.79 had held since 2012 when Michele Kee set it at the NCAA Division III Championships. It was also the eighth-best time in Division III this season, likely guaranteeing her a trip to the NCAA Championships.

In addition to the individual accomplishments, Lewis earned 22 points for the Athenas for her win, while freshman Natalie Larsen contributed 17 for a fourth-place finish, and senior Emma Stacy added 14 by qualifying for the finals and coming in seventh.

The 50 free capped off the individual events for Friday, and Crawford earned a narrow win with a time of 23.44, beating out Hannah Zarmuhl of Pomona-Pitzer by two-tenths of a second. Crawford's time would be an NCAA "B" cut, but she already swam a school-record 23.29 against Pomona-Pitzer in the regular season which already put her under the cutline. Freshman Ava Sealander came in fifth, sophomore Natalia Orbach-Mandel was seventh, and senior Riley Hoffman finished eighth, as the Athenas had four qualifiers in the finals.

CMS ended the day with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1;34.52 (a "B" cut time), just .4 behind Pomona-Pitzer, but still maintained a 38-point lead going into Saturday, when the backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke events get started.
