CMS Women's Swimming and Diving Wins Nine Events in Final Regular Season Tune-Up

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team won nine of the individual events at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in the final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships, which will be held Feb. 21-24 in Commerce.

Eight different Athenas won races on the day, with freshman Ava Sealander the lone dual winner, taking both the butterfly events. 

After Pomona-Pitzer took the opening relay, Sophomore Allie Umemoto started off the individual events by taking first in the 500 in 5:18.72, followed by senior Torrey Hart in second in 5:24.07. Pomona-Pitzer won the next two events, but sophomore Mia Syme won the 400 IM, finishing in 4:47.47 to start a wave of five straight Athena wins.

Sealander started the winning streak with a 59.04 in the 100 fly, edging Umemoto, who also broke the one-minute barrier in 59.88. Freshman Leila El Masri won the 200 free in 1:59.53, and junior Claire Bacon-Brenes edged out classmate Bryn Edwards in the 100 breast 1:07.07 to 1:07.33.

Sophomore Elena Kovachevich added another win for CMS in the 100 back, as the only swimmer in the race to break a minute (58.52). Freshman Natalie Larsen then won the 200 back in 2:09.27, before Pomona-Pitzer finally ended the Athena run with a win in the 100 free. 

Edwards took first place in the 200 breast in 2:27.40, which was followed by Sealander earning her second win of the day in the 200 fly (2:12.29) in the final event of the day. 

The CMS swimmers will have a week off before the SCIAC Championships begin on Thursday, Feb. 21. The CMS divers, meanwhile, will be at Pomona-Pitzer this coming Saturday and Sunday for their portion of the SCIAC Championships.
