CMS Women's Swimming and Diving Sweeps Every Event in Road Win Over Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team won every event while setting three pool records as it remained perfect in the SCIAC with a dominant 194-39 win over Redlands on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Athenas remain perfect in SCIAC dual competition at 6-0, with one tri-meet left on Feb. 2 against Cal Lutheran and La Verne. CMS also swept every swimming event for the second weekend in a row, after coming in second in only one diving event a week ago at Whittier.

Sophomore Mia Syme was the first to set a Thompson Aquatic Center record in the 1000 free, winning in 10:40.76, breaking a facility standard which had held since 2011. Junior Jocelyn Crawford set the pool mark in the 50 free with a 24.09, breaking another mark which had been on the books for eight years. Freshman Augusta Lewis added a third new Thompson record in the 400 IM, clocking a 4:33.54, breaking a 2011 record (4:38.46) by almost five full seconds.

The Athenas began the day with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, with Elena Kovachevich, Rachel Wander, Ava Sealander and Natalia Orbach-Mandel finishing in 3:59.89, while the CMS B and C teams made it a 1-2-3 finish. After Syme's win in the 1000, senior Riley Hoffman won the 200 free, finishing in 1:59.73. followed by sophomore Allie Umemoto and Syme, who got right back in the pool after her 1000 win to compete again.

Sealander cruised to a win of over 10 seconds in the 200 fly (2:12.82), and Hoffman picked up second win of the day in the 100 free, winning in 54.77 by just .07 over teammate Emma Stacy. Freshman Natalie Larsen continued her strong rookie season in the backstroke, winning in 2:10.56. Syme (5:12.96 in the 500) and Lewis (2:23.92 in the 200 breast) each picked up their second wins of the day, before the Athenas capped off the swim events with a 3:37.52 in the 400 free relay, with sophomore Janet Tran, Umemoto, Hoffman and Orbach-Mandel earning a 10-second win.

CMS dropped one of the diving events last week, but senior Jacque Desmond made sure that a repeat didn't happen, sweeping both the one-meter and the three-meter, with sophomore Emily Bhatt taking second in both.

After a week of rest, the Athenas will have their final meet in Axelrood Pool this winter when they host Cal Lutheran and La Verne on Feb. 2, beginning at 10 a.m. CMS will try to complete an 8-0 regular season in the SCIAC, before the league championships are held from Feb. 20-23.
