Ava Sealander Named SCIAC Women's Swimmer of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Freshman Ava Sealander was named the SCIAC Women's Swimmer of the Week for her role in helping the CMS women's swimming and diving team cruise to a 199-97 win over Chapman in its first SCIAC meet of the season on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.

Sealander won two individual events and anchored the winning freestyle relay team as the Athenas opened conference play with their first dual win of the year. Both of her individual wins were in convincing fashion, as she captured a victory in the 400 IM by almost 10 full seconds, winning in 4:46.25, while her win in the 50-yard freestyle sprint was almost a full second, as she touched the wall in 24.55, a body length ahead of the competition. She also swam a 24.80 leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay to close out the meet, the fastest split of any of the 24 swimmers who competed in the event. 

CMS won 11 of the 12 individual swimming competitions, and Sealander was the only individual to win more than one, as the Athenas had 10 different swimmers touch the wall first. Six of the 10 first-place finishers for CMS were also members of the freshman class.  

Sealander gives the Athenas the SCIAC Women's Swimmer of the Week Award for the second week in a row. Last week, sophomore distance swimmer Mia Syme took it after winning both of her events at a tri-meet against Washington University and Chicago. 

CMS will be back in action when it returns to Axelrood Pool to host a tri-meet with Occidental and Caltech on Saturday at 10 a.m.
