Women's Swimming and Diving Takes 199-97 Win over Chapman in SCIAC Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team dominated the meet as it took a 199-97 win over Chapman in its SCIAC opener on Saturday afternoon at Axelrood Pool.

The Stags, who had 10 different individual winners while taking all but one of the swimming events on the day, move to 1-3 on the year in dual competition, and 1-0 in the league, after opening up with a difficult non-conference schedule that included UC San Diego, Washington University and the University of Chicago. 

Freshman Ava Sealnder earned a pair of wins for the Athenas, taking the 400 IM in 4:46.25 and adding the 50-free win in 24.55. Junior Jocelyn Crawford rook the 100 back in 59.60, while sophomore Elena Kovachevich took the 200 back in 2:12.31. Freshman Augusta Lewis earned the 100 fly in 58.99, while the 200 fly went to freshman Natalie Larsen in 2:13.38. 

Sophomore Allie Umemoto was the first-place finisher in the 500 and senior Torrey Hart (pictured) won the 1650 as the Athenas took the two distance events. Senior Emma Stacy was the winner in the 100 free in 55.08, while freshman Laurel Krovitz took the 200 free in 1:58.57 to give CMS the clean sweep in all five freestyle events. Freshman Rachel Wander added a win in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.92). 

The Athenas capped off the day by taking first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Crawford, sophomore Janet Tran, Krovetz and Sealander finishing in 1:40.22, edging out their teammates (Lewis, Stacy, Riley Hoffman and Umemoto), who finished in 1:41.88. 

CMS will be back in action next week for a tri-meet with Occidental and Caltech at 10 a.m. at Axelrood Pool.
