Athenas Command Beavers and Tigers in Axelrood Pool

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team picked up a pair of victories over the Occidental Tigers and Caltech Beavers on Saturday morning in Axelrood Pool. The Athenas topped the Tigers 227-66 and defeated the Beavers 229-44 in an impressive day for CMS swimming and diving.

The Athenas won 15 of the 16 events contested on Saturday, including the first 11 to cruise to a dominating effort across the board.

Three Athenas won multiple individual events with Maia Presti (SC), Mia Syme (CMC), and Allie Umemoto (SC) each claiming two first-place finishes. Presti opened the day for the Athenas with strong showings in both the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions. Presti won the three-meter with a score of 249.90 and was even better in the one-meter, finishing with a score of 290.10 to win the event by 75 points.

Mia Syme claimed the 200 Free in a time of 1:56.94 to win the event by nearly two seconds ahead of fellow teammate Natalia Orbach-Mandel (HMC - 1:58.92). Syme's most impressive swim of the day came in the 500 Free later in the meet. The freshman was within striking distance of the Axelrood Pool record with her time of 5:07.51. Her time was just over a second off the pool record set on Nov. 22, 2002 by Cal Baptist's Lindsay Devaney (5:06.49).

Both the 100 Fly and the 200 Fly went to CMS freshman Allie Umemoto. First she claimed the 200 Fly with a time of 2:13.20 to win the event by over three seconds before taking the top spot in the 200 Fly by just under a second. Umemoto finished the 200 Fly in a time of 58.92 to win her second event of the day.

The most exciting victory of the day might have come from Scripps junior Madison Blumer in the 50 Free. Blumer turned in a time of 24.90 to win her first dual event in her career. Blumer was followed by a pair of Athenas asa CMS took the top three spots in the event with Laura Dickinson (CMC - 25.08) and Anne Jang (CMC - 25.36) finishing second and third, respectively.

The Athenas won both the 100 Back and 200 Back with Ivy Chen (HMC) claiming the 100 Back in a time of 1:00.26 and Liv Baker (CMC) taking home the top spot in the 200 Back in 2:10.63.

Natalia Orbach-Mandel won the 100 Free with a time of 53.16 and Janet Tran (CMC) claimed the top spot in the 1000 Free with her time of 10:58.13. Tran's time was more than 12 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the event.

Crystal Yang (HMC) took home first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.62 and Bryn Edwards (CMC) won the 100 Breast with a time of 1:08.29 to round out the Athena's effort in the individual events.

In addition to the strong showings of the individual events, CMS claimed both of the relays. The team of Chen, Edwards, Tran, and Orbach-Mandel won the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:49.93. The Athenas rounded out the meet with a victory in the 400 Free Relay with the team of Umemoto, Emma Stacy (SC), Tran, and Orbach-Mandel winning the event in 3:38.71.

The Athenas will finish their regular season home slate with a meet against Loyola Marymount next Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Axelrood Pool.
