No. 16 Athenas Have No Trouble with Poets and Leopards

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 16 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team hosted the Whittier Poets and La Verne Leopards on Saturday morning in Axelrood Pool. The Athenas swept their SCIAC foes in dominating fashion, winning both matches by at least 100 points.

The Athenas claimed the top spot in 13 of the 16 women's events while defeating La Verne 236-49 and toping Whittier 203-96.

In the one-meter diving competition, Maia Presti (SC) and Jacque Desmond (SC) finished one and two with scores of 251.80 and 218.25 respectively. The duo finished second and third in the three-meter competition, right behind Whittier's Becca Ayers.

It was a team effort for the Athenas in the meet with eight different swimmers winning individual races. Freshman Mia Syme (CMC) and sophomore Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) were the only two individuals to win multiple events. Syme claimed the 200 free (1:58.70) and 500 free (5:15.08) while Crawford touched the wall first in the 50 free (24.09) and 200 back (2:09.07).

Junior Emma Stacey (SC) also put together a strong meet for the Athenas. Not only did Stacey win the 100 free in a time of 55.44, out touching teammate Ice Limchantra (HMC) by three tenths of a second, but she also finished second in the 200 IM (2:18.63) and third in the 200 free (2:01.24).

Senior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) won the 1000 free with a time of 11:00.34. Carrade finished the race over 17 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor while Bryn Edwards (CMC) won the 100 breast by out touching Whittier's Erika Ngo with a time of 1:10.63.

The Athenas claimed both the 100 and 200 butterfly with Allie Umemoto (SC) winning the 100 fly in a time of 58.85 and Lindsey Seidner (CMC) taking the 200 fly in 2:15.07.

Sophomomre Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) won the 200 breast on Saturday with a time of 2:25.55.

The Athenas also showed their depth by claiming both of the relay events contested on Saturday. The team of Crawford, Bacon-Brenes, Umemoto, and Natalia Orbach-Mandel (HMC) won the 200 Medley Relay, touching in 1:48.81. CMS was also first to the wall in the 400 free relay, winning with the team of Ivy Chen (HMC), Umemoto, Orbach-Mandel, and Crawford in a time of 3:38.14.

It was an impressive morning for the Athenas in their first competitive meet in Axelrood Pool this season. The Athenas will be back in action next weekend when they host Redlands. Once again, the diving competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. while swimming will get underway at 11:00 a.m.
