Williams’ 100 fly and Athenas’ 400 medley relay earn points at NCAA Champs
SHENANDOAH, Texas – Swimmers in two events qualified from the morning session to compete in the finals on the second day of the NCAA Championships for men's and women's swimming and diving. Senior Matthew Williams (CMC) placed third in the 100-yard butterfly (47.80) with a new CMS record. Then, the women's 400-yard medley relay of freshmen Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) and Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) with seniors Stephanie Doi (CMC) and Kelly Ngo (CMC) bested their time from the SCIAC Championships and placed 11th at 3:47.47 to close out the evening.
Williams placed fourth in the prelims with a time of 48.35 (a temporary CMS and SCIAC record), just behind Dallas Tarkenton of Mary Washington. In the finals, Williams swam over half a second faster than he did in the prelims, overtaking Tarkenton, and was even the leader of the pack at the 50-yard turn (21.88). Ultimately, the 47.80 earns Williams a new CMS and SCIAC record and 16 points for the CMS men in the team championship.
The same women's 400 medley relay team that won the SCIAC race just three weeks ago, swam almost a second faster to move up to No. 3 on the CMS all-time list. In the prelims, they put up a time of 3:49.30 which was just slightly slower than their composite seed time. In the consolation final, the Athenas placed third (11th overall) due to cutting off nearly two seconds from the morning's prelim time at 3:47.47.
Another Athena team competed in the prelims this morning in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Ngo, Crawford, junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC), and Doi teamed up and placed 19th, just 0.56 seconds off the No. 16 team. With the time of 1:35.42 they still are the No. 7 fastest team in program history.
Individually, Doi also competed in the prelims for the women's 100 fly with a time of 57.43, good for 33rd place in the field. Carrade swam 0.50 seconds faster than her seed time in the 200 free, finishing in the prelims at 1:56.28.
On the men's side, freshman Ben Culberson (CMC) also competed in the 200 free and went 0.28 seconds faster than his seed time to place 39th at 1:41.17. The lone diving competitor of the day was freshman Kendall Hollimon (CMC). He placed 18th on the 1-meter board with a score of 402.80.
With William's third place finish and the women's 400 medley relay's 11th place time, the Stags rank 22nd and the Athenas rank 19th in the team competitions.
Coming up on Friday will be the 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 800-yard free relay, and women's 1M diving.
