Team effort takes Athenas past DI Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swim team earned a big 163-98 win over NCAA Division I Loyola Marymount University on Saturday afternoon. This is the first win for the class of 2017 over a DI or DII opponent.

The two opening events set the tone for the Athenas as they went one-two and then one-three. The strong first-place swim by Kelly Ngo (CMC), Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC), Stephanie Doi (CMC), and Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) in the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.09) just barely edged teammates Ivy Chen (HMC), Kayla Flaten (CMC), Alanna DeMuro (CMC), and Emma Stacy (SC) to kick-start the meet. In the subsequent race, Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) and Lauren Rosenberger (CMC) both turned on the jets in the second half of the 1000-yard freestyle to take first (10:45.38) and third places (10:54.60), respectively. Also racing in the 1000 free was sophomore Torrey Hart (CMC) who, despite her sixth place finish, posted a season best by 22 seconds and a personal best by eight seconds.

While the Lions were led by Hannah Calton and Stacy Maier with four and three event wins each, CMS earned the majority of its points through the depth of the team. The Athenas swept four events (100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke, and the 200-yard individual medley) and placed at least one swimmer in the top-3 in each of the 14 events.

Chen was the sole Athena to come away with two individual wins in the 100 back (59.08) and 200 back (2:08.58). Three swimmers of the winning 200 medley relay team went on to take individual events as well. Bacon-Brenes was the 100 breast champion (1:07.31) while Crawford won the 50-yard freestyle by .33 seconds (24.67).

Emily McKinnon (CMC) and Doi each led Athena sweeps in the 200 breast (2:28.19) and 200 IM (2:11.52). In the 200 breast, CMS had the four fastest times with McKinnon, Flaten and Bacon-Brenes all scoring for the Athenas. Doi, the senior, was tailed closely by freshmen Chen and Liv Baker (CMC) in the 200 IM as less than three seconds separated the teammates at the finish.

The Athenas will once again join forces with the Stags in a home double-dual meet with Cal Lutheran and Caltech on Jan. 28, beginning at 10 a.m. with the diving.
