Winter Invite finishes fall competition
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swim team posted two top-3 finishes in the final day of the Winter Invite at East Los Angeles College on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) raced in the 200-yard breaststroke, placing second at 2:26.01 in the prelims on Sunday. Classmate Henry Limm (HMC) had the fastest time on the men's side in the 200 breast at 2:07.32, more than six seconds faster than the next finisher.
CMS additionally had a strong showing in the mile swim. Junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) led the Athenas with a fifth place finish overall, but the fastest SCIAC swimmer in the 1650-yard freestyle at 18:20.04. Just 15 seconds behind her was junior Lauren Rosenberger (CMC) at 18:35.38 for seventh place. In the men's comparable event, freshman pair Ben Culberson (CMC) and Alex Moody (HMC) had the third and fifth fastest times at 16:45.55 and 16:58.06.
While she was just outside a top-3 finish, freshman Ivy Chen (HMC) was the first to touch the wall of all SCIAC swimmers in two events. In the exciting 100-yard individual medley, Chen placed sixth in the prelims at 1:02.18. Two events later, Chen raced in the 200-yard backstroke and finished with the fourth fastest time at 2:08.53 behind two Cal State East Bay and one Azusa Pacific swimmer.
The team now has a break until the new year. On Jan. 6, part of the CMS team travels to Cal Baptist for the annual distance meet. The next day, Jan. 7, the Stags and Athenas continue SCIAC dual-meet competition by hosting Chapman. The diving will begin at 10 a.m. followed by swimming at 11 a.m.
