Swim and Dive sweep all but two races in Whittier meet

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Freshmen Ivy Chen (HMC), Liv Baker (CMC), and sophomore John Everett won two races each on Saturday to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swim program win handily at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center in Whittier College. Facing off against Whittier College and La Verne, both the Stags and the Athenas defeated both teams by a wide margin. The Stags defeated the Poets 223-54 and the Leopards 219-57, while the Athenas topped Whittier 232-66 and La Verne 232-64.

DIVING

Freshman Kendall Hollimon (CMC) had fairly high marks on the boards, scoring 363.60 on the 1-meter and 323.80 on the 3 M to qualify for the Midwest/South/West Regional. Senior Carli Lessard (HMC) also qualified after winning both events in the women's competition, scoring 290.65 on the 1 M and 297.25 on the 3 M, while junior Maia Presti (SC) qualified in the 1 M at 284.70.

MEN'S SWIM

The Stags dominated with first place finishes in every event but the 100 freestyle, as Everett won the 200 butterfly (1:55.15) and the 200 individual medley (1:59.81). Sophomore Aaron Lutzker (CMC) continued where he left off in the prior meet and beat Dmitri Washington of Whittier in the 100 butterfly by less than a second at 51.52. He also participated alongside seniors Matthew Williams (CMC) and Graham Spurzem (CMC) and freshman Dave Makhervaks (HMC) to win the 200 medley relay at 1:35.47. Makhervaks, Williams, Spurzem, and freshman Jacob Bain (CMC) also combined to win the 400 freestyle relay at 3:12.16. Bain also took the 50 freestyle (21.99), while his classmate Ben Culberson (CMC) took first in the 1000 freestyle at 9:58.21, roughly 23 seconds ahead of Brandon Pon of La Verne. Williams continued his run of dominance on the 200 backstroke, taking first at 1:53.40, and Spurzem took the 200 freestyle at 1:47.28. Freshman Alex Moody (HMC) improved his time from the UCSD Meet on the 500 freestyle by five seconds, finishing 4:52.12 and his classmate Henry Limm (HMC) won the 200 breaststroke at 2:06.41. Sophomore John Jeang won the 100 backstroke by a second at 54.77.

WOMEN'S SWIM

Chen emerged victorious in the 100 backstroke (59.22) and 100 butterfly (58.70), her first in these two events, while Baker had her first individual victories of her career in the 200 backstroke (2:10.56) and 200 individual medley (2:14.58). Freshman Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) won in her shot at the 50 freestyle at 24.27 and her classmate Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) won the 100 breaststroke at 1:07.34. The 200 breaststroke was won by senior Emily McKinnon (CMC) at 2:26.58 and the 200 butterfly was won by sophomore Allie Carter (CMC) at 2:11.40. Sophomore Emma Stacy (SC) won her first event of the season in the 100 freestyle, winning by more than a second at 54.41, and her classmate Riley Hoffman (CMC) took the 200 freestyle at 2:01.16. Junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) beat out her competition by 11 seconds in the 1000 freestyle, clocking in at 10:56.54. The junior combined with Crawford, senior Kelly Ngo (CMC), and sophomore Madison Blumer (SC) to dominate the 400 freestyle relay by 10 seconds at 3:39.05. Ngo then won the 200 medley relay alongside Blumer, senior Kayla Flaten (CMC), and freshman Alanna DeMuro(CMC) at 1:51.17.

The swim program will head off to East Los Angeles College from Dec. 2 – 4 to participate in the Winter Invite. Preliminary events begin at 10:00 am, with finals slated for 5:00 pm each day of the event.
