Six top finishes on Day 3 of SCIAC Championships have CMS teams in second

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming & diving teams on Day 3 of the SCIAC Championships, added six more single-event conference championships (four men's and two women's) to its team total. The Athenas (629 points) and Stags (713 points) sit in second place overall in the meet standings behind Pomona-Pitzer, who has led throughout the first three days of the SCIAC Championships. The Stags gained ground on Pomona-Pitzer (731) Saturday as they moved from 66 points down after Day 2, to now just 18 points behind. Pomona-Pitzer (725) put some distance between itself and the Athenas Saturday in the women's meet.

The four SCIAC-winning events for the Stags were in the 100 fly and 100 back (junior Matthew Williams - CMC), 1-meter diving (sophomore Patrick Quarberg - CMC) and 400 medley relay (Williams, senior Zach Alleva - CMC, senior Matthew Valentine – HMC and sophomore Noah Deer - CMC). The 100 fly time for Williams was .23 off the meet and SCIAC record. The competition for the SCIAC championship in men's 1-meter diving could not have been much closer as Quarberg (499.35) topped La Verne's Scott MacKay by less than a point and had the second-best 1-meter score in program history.

In the final event of the day for the men, the CMS 'A' 400 medley relay team finished in first and touched the wall in 3:18.55. During the process, Valentine swam the fastest 100 fly relay leg in CMS history (48.50). The previous record was 48.54 set in 2014.

Junior Stephanie Doi (CMC) brought home another top podium finish for the Athenas Saturday, this time in the 100 fly (56.71). Classmate Emily McKinnon (CMC), in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.22), had the other first place finish for the Athenas and her time came under the NCAA 'B' cut mark. Sophomore Lauren Rosenberger (CMC) in the 400 IM (4:34.95), also had a 'B' cut time to go along with her third-place finish. Junior Kelly Ngo (CMC) placed in third in the 200 free (1:53.52).

In addition to four conference champions, the Stags put four others on the podium: freshman John Everett (400 IM – 3rd), Valentine (100 fly – 3rd), senior Alex Poltash (CMC; 200 free – 2nd) and Alleva (CMC; 100 breaststroke – 2nd). The Stags had a total of 10 'B' cut marks on Day 3.

Day 4 preliminaries start at 9 a.m. and the women's 3-meter diving finals start at 1:30 p.m. Day 4 swimming finals start at 5 p.m. with the senior recognition preceding the finals at 4:45 p.m.
