Freshmen boost swim & dive past Redlands
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving team won 25 of the 26 events on the day in the Saturday dual meet against Redlands. The men won with 187 points to Redlands' 53 and the women won 165-75. Head coach Charlie Griffiths said, "Any time you go up a quality SCIAC opponent and win as many events as we did, that is evidence of our excellent preparation."
On the men's side, the Stags finished first in every event and swept the podium in two events: the 400 yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle. There were four multi-event winners, three of whom were triple winners. All three triple-winners were freshman from Harvey Mudd: John Jeang (HMC), Aaron Lutzker (HMC) andJackson Crewe (HMC). Jeang, Lutzker, Tyler Welty (CMC) and Crewe started the swimming events off with a victory in the 400 medley relay. Jeang went on to individually win the 100 yard freestyle and then anchor the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Joseph Hinton (CMC), Trevor Fung (HMC), Zachary Goland (HMC). Lutzker's other wins came in the 200 yard butterfly and then he swam a top-10 time in the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:08.44. After swimming the anchor leg in the 400 medley relay, Crewe continued his success with freestyle and won the 200 yard free and 500 yard free. Hinton also won the 50 yard free.
The Athenas won 12 of 13 events and placed first, second, and third in two events: the 400 yard individual medley and the 500 yard freestyle. Four women won multiple events including one freshman notching three wins. Two members of the 400 yard medley relay team, freshman Naomi Ngo (CMC) and junior Kayla Flaten(CMC) each went on to win the 200 yard butterfly and 200 breaststroke respectively. The rest of the relay team was sophomore Anastasia Ibrahim (CMC) and freshman Katie Erickson (HMC). Junior Courtney Chan (CMC) took home the 50 free and then swam the third leg of the 400 free relay, which was anchored by freshman Riley Hoffman (CMC). Hoffman also individually won the 100 free and 200 free.
In the diving, junior Carli Lessard (HMC) won both boards with zone qualifying scores. From the 3-meter board, she hit 275.45 and 266.75 on the 1-meter. The CMS sophomore men – Patrick Quarberg (CMC) and Victor Ginelli (CMC) took the 1M and 3M events easily. On the 1M board, Quarberg won and both scored over 290, good enough for a zone qualification. From 3M, Ginelli took first, followed by Quarberg.
Next up for the Stags and Athenas is the Winter Invite at South Gate on Dec. 11 and 12.
