CMS Opens at UCSD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athena and Stag swimmers and divers opened the 2015-16 season against NCAA Division-II power, UC San Diego.

The Stags earned four victories on the day and notched several other quick times. Six swimmers in the meet posted times faster than 1:45.0 in the 200 yard freestyle with senior, Alex Poltash (CMC), controlling the field in 1:42.78. Three events later, a trio of CMS freshmen finished the 200 yard butterfly under 1:58.0 with Aaron Lutzker (HMC) earning the win in 1:54.22. Poltash and Lutzker's times rank among the top five in NCAA D-III in early season rankings.

Sophomore divers Victor Ginelli (CMC) and Patrick Quarberg (CMC) swept the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. Ginelli took the top spot on the low-board, scoring 273.53, with Quarberg winning the high-board with 285.08 points. Quarberg's 3-meter score qualifies him for the NCAA Zone diving competition in February.

Freshman Tyler Welty (CMC) sprinted to second in the 100 breaststroke (58.47). Additional top-3 performances came from junior Matthew Williams (CMC) in the 100 back and 100 fly, Lutzker in the 200 breast and 200 IM and Poltash in the 100 free. The Stags also earned top-3 performances in the 200 yard medley relay (Williams, Lutzker, Poltash, Joseph Hinton (CMC)) and 400 free relay (Williams, Hinton, John Jeang (HMC), Poltash).

Athena diver junior Carli Lessard (HMC) led CMS with a runner-up performance in 1-meter diving (228.45) and a third place showing on the 3-meter board (227.18). Sophomore Lauren Rosenberger (CMC) was third in the 1000 freestyle and junior Kayla Flaten (CMC) hit the touchpad with third place finishes in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events.
