62-0; Seniors perfect in SCIAC dual meets after Pomona-Pitzer win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A total of 11 Axelrood Pool records fell on Senior Day for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming & diving teams against Sixth Street rival Pomona-Pitzer. The Stags defeated the Sagehens 191-107 while the Athenas won 188-112. Maybe even more impressive is the fact that the 2015 CMS Senior Class (women and men) completed their SCIAC dual-meet careers 62-0 over four seasons, something that no other SCIAC swim & dive program has ever done.

The closest the CMS seniors came to losing in a SCIAC dual-meet over the last four seasons came in 2013 against Pomona-Pitzer, when the Athenas squeaked out a 152-146 win at Axelrood Pool.

For the Athenas, pool records were set in 1-meter diving (Maia Presti – 269.05), the 200-yard medley relay (Kelly NgoStephanie DoiLorea GwoCourtney Chan – 1:46.76), 3-meter diving (Carli Lessard – 270.55), 100-yard backstroke (Ngo - 58.50) and the 100-yard butterfly (Gwo – 56.72).

All told, the Athenas won 13 of 16 events. Ngo participated on the winning 200 medley relay team and then also won the 100-yard backstroke (58.50), 100-yard freestyle (53.35) and 200-yard individual medley (2:11.07). Gwo was also a four-event winner for the Athenas with wins in the 200 medley relay, 50-yard freestyle (24.38), 100 fly and 400-yard relay. Double winners were Doi, Chan and LillyBelle Deer who swam on both winning relay teams. The other individual who won two events for the Athenas was Emily McKinnon in the 100 and 200-yard breast (1:06.85 and 2:24.77).

Of the 10 pool records set by CMS on Saturday, six were set by the Stags. Pool records for the Stags were set in the 200 medley relay (Matthew Williams, Zach Alleva, Patrick Shultz, Alex Poltash – 1:33.16), 100-yard backstroke (Williams – 49.64), 1-meter dive (James Stevick – 355.20), 200-yard backstroke (Williams – 1:51.03), 500-yard freestyle (Alex Mendoza – 4:41.06) and 400-yard relay (Cameron Whiting, Poltash, Shultz and Graham Spurzem – 3:08.31).

Triple winners for the Stags were Williams (200 medley relay, 100 back and 200 back), Shultz (200 medley relay, 50 free (21:27), and 400 relay), and Poltash (200 medley relay, 100 free (45.95) and 400 relay). In diving, Stevick won both the 1-meter and 3-meter (326.65) dives. Other double winners were Alleva (200 medley relay and 100 breast), Mendoza (1000 free and 500 free) and Whiting (200 free and 400 relay).
