Busy weekend for CMS ends with convincing win over Cal Lu

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a busy 24 hour stretch for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming & diving teams, CMS competed in a pair of meets in a less than 24 hour stretch. CMS faced Cal Baptist on Friday in Riverside and then returned to Axelrood Pool on Saturday for a SCIAC meet against Cal Lutheran. 

The action-packed weekend began on Friday, Jan. 9 as CMS traveled to Riverside to face Cal Baptist in its Distance Meet. Cal Baptist defeated the Athenas 152-90. In the men's meet, CMS gave top-25 Division II power Cal Baptist a run for its money, as Cal Baptist pulled out a 126-107 win.

Against Cal Baptist, the Stags won three events while the Athenas won two. For the Stags, Alex Mendoza won the 1000-yard freestyle (9:48.07) and 500-yard freestyle (4:43.19), while Marc Blumberg took the top time in the 300-yard butterfly, nearly five seconds faster than the second place finisher.

For the Athenas, Kelly Ngo won the 300-yard breaststroke (3:47.66) while Carli Lessard won the 1-meter diving event (196.65). Ngo's time in the 300 breaststroke was five-one hundreds of a second faster then the second place finisher.

With very little time to rest, the Athenas and Stags were back in action on Saturday, Jan. 10 at home against Cal Lu in its first conference meet in over a month.

Against Cal Lu, CMS took 30 of 32 events in total; the Athenas swept all 16 events while the Stags won 14 of its 16 events. 

Multi-event winners for the Athenas were Anastasia Ibrahim (200-yard medley relay, 100-yard backstroke), Courtney Chan (200-yard medley relay, 50-yard free), Ngo (100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke, 400-yard freestyle relay), LillyBelle Deer (200-yard medley relay, 500-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle relay) and Stephanie Doi (200-yard medley relay, 400-yard freestyle relay).

Single event winners for the Athenas were Maia Presti (1-meter diving), Lauren Rosenberger (1000-yard freestyle), Molly Loftus (200-yard freestyle), Louisa Dunwiddie (200-yard butterfly), Lessard (3-meter dive), Maddie Crawford (100-yard freestyle), MacKenzie Leake (200-yard breastroke), Lorea Gwo (100-yard butterfly), Kayla Flaten (200-yard IM) and Cassie Burgess (400-yard freestyle relay).

For the Stags, multi-event winners were James Stevick (1 and 3-meter diving), Matthew Williams (200-yard medley relay, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke), Zach Alleva (200-yard medley relay, 100-yard breaststroke), Blumberg (200-yard medley relay, 200-yard butterfly), Cameron Whiting (500-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle relay) and Martin Sartorius (200-yard medley relay, 400-yard freestyle relay). 

Single event winners for the Stags were Brace Young (1000-yard freestyle), Alex Poltash (200-yard freestyle), Austin Melody (200-yard breaststroke), Matt Valentine (100-yard butterfly), Tim Storer (200-yard IM), Graham Spurzem (400-yard freestyle relay) and Patrick Shultz (400-yard freestyle relay).

Both the Athenas and Stags are now 3-0 so far this season in conference meets with the next meet coming up on Jan. 17 at La Verne.
