CMS dominant in SCIAC meet against Chapman and Oxy

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving team competed against SCIAC foes Chapman and Occidental and won both the men's and women's meets. The women beat Occidental 211-83 and beat Chapman 202-100 while the men beat Occidental 211-86 and Chapman 233-55. CMS won 21 of the 28 swimming events and swept the diving competition.

Senior James Stevick outperformed the second place competitor in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events by almost 100 points, winning easily with scores of 322.70 on the 1-meter and 323.05 on the high board. On the women's side, sophomore Maia Presti won the 1-meter event while classmate Mary Lynn Clark took the 3-meter competition by just over one point.

The Athenas won 11 of the 14 events on the day and took both first and second place in eight. Sophomore Stephanie Doi was a quadruple winner in the meet with her performances in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, and 200-yard freestyle relay. Additionally, sophomore Courtney Chan was on both winning relay teams for the Athenas. Freshman teammate Lorea Gwo was part of those winning relays and individually won the 200-yard butterfly. Another triple winner was sophomore Kelly Ngo who was on the 200 medley relay team and also won the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. Her time in the 200 IM was eighth fastest in CMS history. Freshman Anastasia Ibrahim rounds out the multiple winners for the Athenas earning first place in the 100-yard backstroke and for her performance on the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Another notable win was for junior Molly Loftus in the 500-yard freestyle event who won by more than seven seconds.

The Stags won ten events, sweeping the podium in three. The CMS men had six double winners. Senior Timothy Storer won the 200-yard backstroke and 200 IM. Sophomore Graham Spurzem earned first in the 200 medley relay with junior Zach Alleva, sophomore Matthew Williams and senior Cameron Whiting in addition to winning the 100-yard backstroke. Williams, Alleva, freshman Mike Adams and freshman Noah Deer were on the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Fresh off water polo season, Deer also won the 50-yard freestyle. Whiting earned his second win in the 100-yard freestyle.

CMS next competes at the Commerce Invitational Dec. 12-14 that begins at 10 a.m. every day.
