CMS wins six events at relay meet
CMS joined a six team field at the Pomona-Pitzer Relays on Saturday, November 1. The Athenas and Stags combined for six wins in the 19-event meet.
The Stags earned its first win in the non-traditional 500 yard crescendo relay. Marc Blumberg, Bryce Murley, Cameron Whiting and Alex Mendoza swam freestyle distances of 50, 100, 150 and 200 yards for the victory in a time of 4:14.47.
CMS next won the mixed 200 yard freestyle relay. Kelly Ngo, Marc Blumberg, Courtney Chan, Alex Mendoza, LillyBelle Deer, Cameron Whiting, Lorea Gwo and Patrick Shultz each sprinted a 25.
Matt Valentine, Matt Williams and Marc Blumberg joined forces to take the 3 x 100 butterfly relay.
Senior Stags Cameron Whiting, Marc Blumberg and Alex Mendoza won the 3 x 500 freestyle relay. Their time of 14:37.25 was nearly 15 seconds ahead of second place California Baptist University.
CMS ended the day with a pair of first-place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The Athena relay of Stephanie Doi, Kelly Ngo, Courtney Chan and Lorea Gwo edged Cal Baptist by a narrow .04 seconds.
In the men's event, Cameron Whiting, Matt Williams, Graham Spurzem, and Patrick Shultz took the 4 x 50 freestyle sprint.
"It was fun to be tested with a number of close races today," said Head Coach Charlie Griffiths. "We'll see each of the teams in today's field again this season and we know that we need to continue to get better to achieve our goals."
California Baptist won the team scoring with 248 points. Host Pomona-Pitzer was second (229), CMS third (216), LaVerne fourth (68), Concordia fifth (31) and Chapman sixth (25).
CMS will host it annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, November 8. Competition is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.
