Both Athenas and Stags Get Win Over Pomona-Pitzer In Final Home Meet

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In its final home meet of the season on Senior Day, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving teams both earned victories over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Axelrood Pool. The Athenas narrowly defeated the Sagehens 152-146 while the Stags came away with a 240-47 win. With wins over its rival Pomona-Pitzer, both CMS teams remain undefeated heading into their final SCIAC meets of the season on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Redlands.

"There are a lot of great rivalries in college sports at the different levels, but there is really nothing that is similar to CMS, Pomona-Pitzer in terms our proximity," said head coach Charlie Griffiths. "They are a good team, well coached and we know we have to be at our best if we are going to compete with them."

The women's meet came down to the last few events as the Athenas won five of their last six events and closed out the afternoon with wins in the 200-yard breaststroke, 500-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 3-meter springboard and the 200-yard individual medley.

"It was a back and forth meet, we would take a shot and then we would respond," Griffiths said. "I was really proud of how we came back after getting swept in the 100 backstroke. In the next event, we went one, two in the breaststroke in a really close race and then one, two, three again in the 200 butterfly. That kept us in the meet so we could keep battling the rest of the way."

Of the 16 women's events in the evenly matched meet, both the Athenas and Sagehens won eight events. Junior Michele Kee was a double-winner for CMS winning both the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200 IM. Other individual winners were sophomore Louisa Dunwiddie (1000-yard freestyle), freshman Maya Kale (200-yard butterfly), sophomore Mackenzie Marrs (200 breaststroke), sophomore LillyBelle Deer (500 freestyle) and junior Erin MacLean (100 butterfly). Also earning a win was senior diver Carmen Lundell on the 3-meter springboard.

On the men's side the Stags took all 16 events en route to the win with five individuals earning wins in multiple events. Senior Brad Perfect (100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke), sophomore Marc Blumberg (200 butterfly and 500 freestyle), sophomore Patrick Shultz (50 freestyle and 100 butterfly) and sophomore Tim Storer (200 backstroke and 200 IM) all won multiple events for the Stags. Sophomore diver James Stevick earned wins in both events on the springboard. CMS also captured wins in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
