CMS Women's Soccer Defeats Caltech 2-0 at Home

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Caelyn Smith created a goal in the first minute with a cross that was deflected in by a Caltech defender, and then scored a second off a pass from Taylor Arakaki in the 29th minute, as the Athenas beat Caltech 2-0 on Saturday morning at Pritzlaff Field.

With the win, CMS moves to 5-4-2 on the season and 3-1-2 in SCIAC, while Caltech falls to 3-4-2 overall and 1-4 in league play. Smith delivered a shot from eight-yards out to capture her second goal of the season after Arakaki played the ball through a crowd of Beavers defenders for a nice assist.

Sadie Brown recorded her fifth shutout on the season and moved to 5-2-1 to go along with 28 total saves on the year.

Eva Fernandez setup Kaitlyn Helfrich with a nice shot attempt in the 58th minute but sent the ball wide as the Athenas top goal scorer came just shy of another CMS goal. Lizzie Iwicki also nearly found the back of the net in the 44th minute with a 20-foot shoot that struck the crossbar before going rolling out of bounds.

Megan Robertson had four saves for Caltech to keep her team in striking distance, but the Beavers were unable to get going on the offensive end. CMS controlled play throughout, outshooting Caltech 13-2 for the game and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

CMS will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when the Athenas travel to take on UC Santa Cruz at 12 p.m.
