CMS Women's Soccer Dominates Second Half, But Settles for 1-1 Tie with Occidental

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - After a scoreless opening half, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team outshot Occidental 19-2 in the second half, but each team scored once as the Athenas had to settle for a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kemp Stadium.

Sam Ree put CMS ahead with a goal in the 69th minute, but the Athenas had to settle for one point after the Tigers tied it in the 86th. With the tie, CMS moves to 3-4-2 on the year and 1-1-2 in the SCIAC, while Occidental moves to 2-2-3 overall and 0-1-3 in league play.

Ree's goal was set up after Olivia Tuffli had her shot saved by Occidental goalie Ingrid Odmark over the endline for a corner kick. Caelyn Smith took the corner, and Ree was able to put it home at the 68:26 mark to give CMS the lead.

That lead seemed safe, as CMS held a 17-0 shot advantage in the second half until the closing minutes. However, the Tigers had their first shot in the 83rd minute deflect over for a corner kick, and then with just 5:13 left, they found the equalizer when Anna Fukushima scored off a Clare Madden assist.

CMS tried to immediately answer and earned a corner kick, but the last effort for the Athenas was thwarted as Odmark saved a shot from Jihae Oh. The Athenas finished with a 25-6 edge in shots for the game, including 19-2 after halftime after the spread was only 6-4 in the opening half, as well as a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Odmark had nine saves in the second half for Occidental, while Sadie Brown had two for the Athenas.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
