Lewison's First Collegiate Goal Gives CMS Women's Soccer Road Win at La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - First-year forward Cate Lewison scored her first career goal in the 40th minute to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over La Verne on Saturday afternoon at Ortmayer Stadium.

With the win, CMS moves to 3-4 on the season and levels its SCIAC record at 1-1. La Verne slips to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in league play with the loss.

Lewison broke a scoreless tie with 5:58 left in the first half, converting after an initial shot taken by Jenna Rempel was blocked.

CMS controlled play throughout, outshooting La Verne 16-2 for the game and holding a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Early on, Emma Fogg had a header on a corner kick in the 18th minute that was cleared off the line by a La Verne defender to keep the game scoreless, but Lewison was able to break the tie before the half.

Sadie Brown had two save to pick up her third shutout in the last four games, including one save in the final 10 seconds as the Leopards took one final chance at the CMS bet. McKenzie Maggiore had eight saves for La Verne to keep her team in the game, including four saves against Lewison, who led CMS with six shots. Lewison, though, was able to get the better of her the one time the Athenas needed for the win.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Chapman at 4 p.m. That game will be part of a doubleheader that will also see the CMS men's soccer team face the Panthers at 7 p.m.
