CMS Women's Soccer Knocks Off No. 6 MIT 1-0

MANCHESTER, Vt. - Sophomore center back Annie McKinley headed in a corner kick in the first half for her first collegiate goal, and it held up the rest of the way as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team upset sixth-ranked MIT on Saturday afternoon at Applejack Stadium in Vermont.

With the win, CMS improves to 1-3, picking up the first win for new head coach David Nolan, after the Athenas opened with three games in four days last weekend, including one against Division II CSU San Marcos, and another against top-10 Chicago. MIT suffers its first loss of the 2022 campaign and slips to 3-1-1 on the year with the defeat.

McKinley's goal came at the 31:54 mark of the first half off a corner kick taken by Laurel Ovenell. The Athenas held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks on the day, including 7-0 in the first half, and were able to take advantage of one of them for the game's only goal.

Sadie Brown went the distance in goal for CMS to get the shutout, making just one first-half save. MIT hit the post early on in the 18th minute, and missed wide on the rebound, but that was as close as the Engineers would come. MIT finished with a 12-6 edge in shots, but much of the spread came late, as they tried three desperation shots in the final 1:19, that all missed the target.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on Williams at 1 p.m. local time at Applejack Stadium.
