CMS Women's Soccer Drops Tight Battle with No. 8 Chicago

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Jihae Oh and Annie Parizeau had their first career goals, but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team lost a tough 4-2 battle with eighth-ranked Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Pritzlaff Field.

With the loss, CMS moves to 0-2 on the young season, with the losses coming to Division II CSU San Marcus (1-0 on Thursday) and to one of the top 10 teams in Division III in Chicago. The Maroons move to 1-1 on the year with the win, which they were able to seal in the 83rd minute with a penalty kick.

CMS got the first goal of the game when Oh was able to strike from inside the box off a feed from Cate Lewison to give the Athenas a 1-0 lead at the 10:53 mark. Chicago was able to knot the score up though with 4:36 left in the half when Alai Araujo-Elorza struck on a 25-yarder off a CMS turnover to make it 1-1 heading into the break.

The Maroons kept the momentum going and took their first lead at 2-1 just 9:40 into the second half on a 30-yard free kick form Livia Sabloff. Chicago then appeared to take control when Hannah Rittenhouse got loose up the right side and scored with 25:32 left.

However, CMS came right back on a goal from Annie Parizeau, who scored from inside the box with Chicago goalie Sophie Pilarski out of net, making it a 3-2 game with 24:52 left. However, CMS was whistled for a penalty kick, and Rittenhouse scored her second of the game with 7:34 left to seal it.

Sadie Brown had a solid effort in goal despite the loss with seven saves, several of which were difficult stops to help keep CMS in it. The Maroons finished with a narrow 16-11 edge in shots on the day.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on Carleton for a 9:30 a.m. contest. The match was originally scheduled for 11 a.m., but was moved up due to the current heat wave in Southern California.
