CMS Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 to CSU San Marcos on Late Goal

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team had a solid opening performance against Division II CSU San Marcos, but dropped a narrow 1-0 decision on a goal with 4:39 left in regulation on Thursday afternoon.

The Athenas divided their minutes up for their season-opener against a non-Division III school, with a total of 26 players seeing action. CMS was playing their first of three games in four days, with a pair of big Division III contests looming on Saturday and Sunday at home against Chicago and Carleton, respectively.

First-year Cate Lewison and senior Taylor Arakaki had shots for the Athenas, while first-year Sadie Brown had two saves and no goals allowed in 72 minutes. The Cougars ended up with an 11-2 edge in shots, but CMS had the 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Athenas appeared poised to come away with a 0-0 tie (there is no overtime this year by new NCAA rules), but a late corner kick proved to be the difference for the Cougars. The first shot attempt for the Cougars was blocked by the CMS defense, but Hannah Ramos was able to tuck the rebound into the lower-right corner.

CMS will play No. 8 Chicago on Saturday at 10 a.m. in its home opener at Pritzlaff Field (the start time was originally 11 a.m., but was moved up due to the heat wave this weekend). The Carleton game on Sunday is now scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. kickoff.
