CMS Women's Soccer Defeats Caltech 2-1; Helfrich Scores Two Goals in Victory

PASADENA, Calif. - Kaitlyn Helfrich scored both goals for the Claremont Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team as the Athenas were able to pick up a 2-1 road win over the Caltech Beavers on Saturday morning. 

CMS saw its record improve to 6-1-2, including 3-1-2 in the SCIAC with the victory, while Caltech fell to 2-5 and 0-4.

"The team has faced a series of tests that we have learned from, and this was another good one," CMS head coach Jen Clark said. "There were quite a few lessons from today's match and we are hopeful that we can use our upcoming practices to keep improving and get us ready for the next test in front of us. It was a gritty performance, and we truly showed our character and embodied our team values out there."

The Athenas outshot the Beavers 19-9, while Athena Manthouli had five saves on the day for CMS. 

With the game still scoreless, Nicole Oberlag sent a pass from outside the box, finding Helfrich to give the Athenas a 1-0 lead 12:25 into the first half.  

The Beavers responded shortly after with a score of their own in the 22nd minute as Jennifer Solgaard found the back of the net for Caltech, tying the game at 1-1.

The Athenas were able to capture the go-ahead goal at the 68:57 mark once Tori Holden found a streaking Helfrich, enabling CMS take to the 2-1 lead with her second score of the game.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night hosting the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens for a Sixth Street Rivalry game at 7 p.m., followed by the Cal Lutheran Regals on Oct. 9 at Pritzlaff field at 7 p.m.
