Gabby Clouse (CMC '20) Earns Fulbright Grant to Pursue Master's Degree in Finland

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer senior Gabby Clouse earned a Fulbright Grant from Claremont McKenna, which will take her to Finland in 2021 to pursue a master's degree in molecular biotechnology and diagnostics.

Clouse, who was one of the captains of a CMS team which won an NCAA Regional this year and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Division III Tournament, will be conducting cutting-edge research on medical diagnostic devices while in Finland. It won't be the first time her academic pursuits have taken her internationally, as Clouse spent the summer of 2018 in Ecuador, where she collaborated with with teams of medical professionals to improve efficiency within hospitals. 

"I was shadowing doctors in different types of healthcare facilities," she said. "That was a really meaningful experience for me to learn a lot about the different healthcare challenges that people face throughout the world."

During her CMC career, Clouse has also been a public health board member for Refresh Bolivia, a five-colleges club which works to improve public health in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Last summer, she stayed in Claremont to work for a biomedical engineering lab, developing a product which could help to expedite diagnostic speeds while building data points for her senior thesis. 

On the soccer field, Clouse was part of a team that won a SCIAC title as a first-year in 2017, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. As a senior, she and her classmates did one better, moving on to the Round of 16 after defeating league rival and regional host Cal Lutheran on penalty kicks. 

A two-way midfielder, Clouse played in 77 games over four seasons for the Athenas, and had a career-high five goals this season to help CMS earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. She has also been chosen to the SCIAC All-Academic Team
