CMS Women's Soccer Opens 2019 Campaign with Dominant 6-0 Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Gabby Clouse scored just 1:14 into the contest to get the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team started, and senior Rhiann Holman added two goals and an assist as the Athenas started out their 2019 season with a 6-0 win over Johnson & Wales (Denver) on Friday afternoon at Pritzlaff Field.

With the win, the Athenas actually start out the year 1-0 with a 6-0 victory for the second straight season, after defeating Soka last year behind a Holman hat trick. 

It didn't take long for the Athenas to take control of the game, with four seniors combining on the first two goals in the opening five minutes. Clouse scored in the second minute when she finished a crossing pass from fellow senior Sarah Tocher at the 1:14 mark. Just over three minutes later, senior Kira Favakeh found Holman with a lead pass into the box to make the score 2-0 just 4:24 into the contest.

CMS added to its margin just under 20 minutes into the contest, as sophomore Samantha Ree scored her first collegiate goal, when she took a cross from Holman and put a shot into the net on her second touch for a 3-0 lead at the 19:52 mark. 

First-year forward Vida Hasson made it 4-0 heading into the halftime break, when she scored with 9:57 left on the clock, off of quick passing from junior Aarthi Namasivayam and first-year Bryn Kable. The Athenas tacked on two more goals in the second half on penalty kicks, with Holman netting the first one just 3:34 into the second stanza, and sophomore Lauryn Jeans closing out the scoring with a penalty kick at the 66:13 mark. 

CMS had a dominant advantage in the shot department, finishing with a 20-2 margin, as junior goalkeeper Cam Hamson only needed to make two saves in 70 minutes before they gave way to sophomore Athena Manthouli to finish out the shutout. 

The Athenas will be right back in action tomorrow, when they host Illinois Wesleyan at 7 p.m. to finish off a busy opening weekend.
