Hamson's 11 Saves Help CMS Women's Soccer Earn 0-0 Draw at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore goalie Claire Hamson had 11 saves, including three diving ones in the first overtime, to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team come away with a 0-0 tie at Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday morning.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed a day due to soggy field conditions from Saturday's rain. With the tie, the Athenas move to 7-4-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer moves alone into first place at 10-2-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the SCIAC (with one of its losses coming 1-0 to CMS in the first meeting between the teams).  

Hamson was big in the second half, when she tallied seven of her saves as Pomona-Pitzer held an 11-2 edge in shots. That momentum carried into the first overtime, when the Sagehens had a 4-1 edge in shots with Hamson coming up with three big saves, all of which were diving stops to tip the ball off frame for corner kicks, including a head from the top of the six-yard box from Lily Gane that she just pushed wide of the right post. 

The second overtime saw the Athenas take some of the momentum back, as junior midfielder Rhiann Holman and freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ueland each had shots saved by Pomona-Pitzer goalie Isa Berardo. Holman had another shot attempt in the 107th minute that went wide, and the Sagehens attempted two shots from distance in the closing minutes that sailed high as the game ended in a 0-0 tie. 

The second half also saw Hamson come up big with a diving stop on a 25-yard free kick from Pomona-Pitzer's Emily Tomz in the 71st minute. Tomz's shot got past the CMS wall and appeared to be bending inside the left post, but Hamson laid out to her right to tip it wide for a corner kick. 

Holman led the Athenas with five shots, out of the 11 the team took, as the Sagehens finished with a 21-11 edge in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. The shutout was the eighth of the season for Hamson, including a pair of 0-0 ties that went 100 timeouts (including one at Occidental). 

The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday night for a pivotal home contest against Cal Lutheran as they try to fight for one of the four spots in the SCIAC Tournament.
