CMS Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Home Decision to La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team fell on the short end of a 1-0 home decision to La Verne on Saturday afternoon at Pritzlaff Field.

With the loss, the Athenas slip to 7-4-1 and 5-3-1 in the SCIAC, while La Verne improves to 2-7-2 and 2-6-1 in league play.

After a scoreless first half, the Leopards found the net at the 59:05 mark of the second half when Amaris Sherlock converted on a crossing pass from Cambria Smith that was flicked forward by Andrea Story.

That would be the only shot that the Leopards would take in the entire second half, as the Athenas held an 11-1 edge in shots after intermission (13-4 overall). In the five minutes following the goal, the Stags managed three shot attempts to try to equalize, but junior forward Kira Favakeh and sophomore midfielder Katrina Ostrom had their efforts saved by La Verne goalkeeper Jasmine Valadez, and senior Megan Lo missed high.

CMS had a couple of chances off corner kicks down the stretch as well, but senior midfielder Sarah Malott had her shot deflected over for a corner in the 79th minute and senior defender Sydney Talmi had her shot blocked in the 88th minute.

Favakeh led CMS with four shot attempts (two on net), while junior midfielder Rhiann Holman had three. Valadez had four saves for the Leopards and sophomore Claire Hamson had two for CMS, which held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks as well.

The Athenas have a week off before returning to action next Saturday with an 11 a.m. road contest at Pomona-Pitzer.
