Rhiann Holman Strikes Early to Lead CMS Women's Soccer to 4-0 Win at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - Junior midfielder Rhiann Holman scored twice in the first 11 minutes, including just 1:55 into the contest to start the scoring, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team captured a 4-0 road win over Caltech on Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Athenas improve their record to 7-3-1 on the year, and 5-2-1 in the SCIAC as they remain in a tight logjam near the top of the league standings. Caltech, meanwhile, slips to 1-8 overall and 0-8 in league play. 

Holman's first goal of the game was her eighth of the season and came off some quick passing in the offensive third, as senior Sarah Malott and junior Kira Favakeh both had assists to put the Athenas in front 1-0 less than two minutes into the contest. 

Holman then doubled the lead at the 10:27 mark when she worked a give-and-go with Sarah Tocher and buried her ninth goal of the year. The lead stayed at 2-0 until midway through the second half, when freshman Elizabeth Ueland scored with 26:09 left to push the lead to 3-0. off an assist from from fellow freshman Nicole Oberlag. Oberlag then finished off the scoring in the final minute when she converted off her own rebound. 

CMS picked up its third shutout in a row, as sophomore goalie Claire Hamson was called on to make two saves, both of which came in the first half. The Athenas outshot Caltech 24-3 for the game, including 13-0 after halftime. Kali Drango had seven saves for the Beavers in a losing cause. 

CMS will be back in action when it returns home to face La Verne on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest at Pritzlaff Field.
