CMS Women's Soccer Drops Home Contest to Redlands 3-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior Rhiann Holman scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the score in the first half, but Redlands' Hayley Romo's second of the game broke the tie just under five minutes later as the Bulldogs went on to take a 3-1 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team on Saturday evening at Pritzlaff Field.

With the loss, the Athenas slip to 5-3 on the year, including 3-2 in the SCIAC, while Redlands remains unbeaten in league play at 4-0-1, and moves to 5-2-1 overall.

Romo got the scoring started just 2:29 into the game, when CMS attempted to head the ball clear of its own penalty area. Romo settled the ball just outside the top of the 18-yard box, took a quick dribble in, and sent a shot into the upper-right corner to put the Athenas in a 1-0 hole.

Holman responded, though, when she sent a 25-yard blast into the upper-left corner off a short pass from sophomore midfielder Katrina Ostrom at the 14:46 mark to bring the Athenas level.

Just 4:47 later, though, Romo scored her second when she took a short pass from Adi Fellows and sent a long 30-yarder just under the crossbar and into the net to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. The 2-1 margin held until 18:45 remaining when Eva Vlassopoulos scored on a through ball from Madison Mills after a CMS turnover to give the Bulldogs an insurance goal.

That was nearly crucial, as Holman came within a mere inch of getting her second of the game in the 82nd minute, blistering a 25-yarder that hit the inside of the far post, but stayed out of the net. Redlands was able to regroup after the close call and finish out the game with no further threats.

The Bulldogs finished with a narrow 17-11 edge in shots while each team took three corner kicks. Holman led all players with four shot attempts.

CMS is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Chapman for a 7 p.m. contest at Pritzlaff Field.
