Late Goal Gives CMS Women's Soccer a 1-0 Road Win at Fontbonne

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Freshman Sara Catherine Ueland scored her first collegiate goal with 9:04 remaining to break a scoreless deadlock and give the CMS women's soccer team a 1-0 road win over Fontbonne on Saturday evening.

With the win, the Athenas improve to 3-1 on the season while coming away with a win in their third game in four days. CMS began the busy stretch with a 2-1 overtime win at La Verne on Wednesday in its SCIAC opener, before traveling to face No. 10 Washington (Mo.) on Friday, falling 3-0 in a driving rainstorm. With only one day of rest, the Athenas were able to prevail 1-0 against Fontbonne to split its Missouri trip. 

Ueland's goal game on a 20-yard blast into the left corner of the net off a feed from junior forward Aarthi Namasivayam. ending what had been a frustrating first 80 minutes for the Athenas. CMS held a 25-2 edge in shots while the score remained deadlocked 0-0, before Ueland found the net on shot No. 26. 

Early on, junior forward Kira Favakeh hit the crossbar in the 11th minute on the second shot of the game from the Athenas. Junior midfielder Rhiann Holman was dangerous all afternoon, taking 11 shots for CMS, but wasn't able to tack on her fifth goal of the season after scoring four times in the first two games. 

CMS finsihed the game with a 27-2 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalie Claire Hamson needed to make one save to pick up her second shutout of the year. 

The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday when they host their home opener, taking on Sixth Street rival Pomona-Pitzer for a 7 p.m. game at Pritzlaff Field.
